Nerve impulses, also known as "action potentials", are the foundation of information transmission within the nervous system, which consists of two classes of cells: neurons and neuroglial cell (glia). Through nerve impulses, neurons can transmit signals from sensory input and cooperate with muscle cells for movement response. In general, glia can not produce nerve impulses, although researchers have found a few exceptions. However, there is a type of glia, called astrocytes, which can release neurotransmitters and directly participate in signal transmission. They play important roles in infra-slow oscillations (Chapter 5) and sleep (Chapter 7).
