"Consciousness" is closely tied with the brain. To understand the origin of consciousness, we must know the structure and function of the brain. Although this chapter uses human brain as an example, other higher animals are quite similar. In fact, many functions of the brain were obtained from the study on rats.

The human brain can be divided into three parts: brainstem, cerebellum and cerebrum.
